They compare the piece against the artist's documented body of work, its ownership history, and the physical evidence in its materials, or they read the signed record that travels with a digital photograph. The finding they report is genuine, not genuine, or unresolved. The work and its papers reach them from painters, photographers, sellers, and registrars, and the finding moves on to buyers, conservators, and catalogue scholars. Their contribution is a tested comparison that reports whether a work matches the standard it claims to meet.
