A sound designer makes the original sounds a film needs. Working from picture that is already cut, this person invents original effects for creatures, weapons, weather, and machines, and builds whole sonic worlds around them. Field recordings, synthesis, and layered processing become finished sound cues. The designer takes the cut picture and recorded location audio, follows the director's sense of the sound, then passes the new cues to the mixer who blends them. These crafted sounds give the film its voice.
