A compiler builds one coherent resource out of material other people already wrote. The work is selection and sequence: choosing which essays, chapters, articles, or lessons belong together, and setting the order that makes them teach as a whole. The result is a concrete object, a reader, coursepack, anthology, or remixed textbook. Compilers draw on the authors of every source and on a subject expert's scope, then hand the assembled resource to copy editors, developmental editors, and reviewers. The compiler contributes the shape of the whole.
